Chuck Klosterman, in his most recent book, suggests that football is probably the best way to understand the culture of the United States in the last half of the 20th century. For various reasons, he predicts it will go the way of boxing or horse-racing—still a part of the larger society, but not the  cultural monolith it is today. 128 million Americans watched the Super Bowl LX.
